Introducing me

PS! For those with readers, sorry for all the edits, it kept losing my breaks! So, I've redone the post, hopefully it works this time.

OK, here goes... my first contribution to this blog. I don't know a lot of you on here, so here's a bit about me first...I'm Jeanette (now known as Jenty). I have 2 blogs, one is a photography blog, and the other is an outlet for me to vent.
LOL, I can't even figure out what to write here! Thankfully the first post is the obligatory meme!

1. Post a picture of your kid(s).

Ok, this one is VERY easy considering I take photos every SINGLE day! The problem is in the choice. These are my favourites this month.
This is Bradley, he's 5..
.Looking up
... and Connor, he's 16 months old
.Laughing

2. Tell us all 3 things we wouldn't know about you.

Oh crumbs, here comes the hard bits, considering a lot of me is in my blogs. I'm going to go back to pre-photo and ramblings blog here, not many people read my Livejournal blog, so the odds of you all knowing that history is very slim.
a. I only started blogging to keep friends overseas up-to-date with my goings on, but now I can't live without it. I've met the most amazing people online. I actually met most of my RL friends online, on a SA mother's forum. I've lost touch with most of my "old" pre-net friends, which is quite sad actually.
b. I try to learn one new thing every year. I wonder what I'm going to try and learn next year, this year it's been the DSLR (I think, can't think of anything new other than that).
c. I work in the Financial Services industry, and I'm a Business Analyst Manager and a Strategic Programme Manager - I do both - at the same time. And I enjoy it. I moan a lot about it, but I love that I'm constantly learning new things. I don't love that I manage people... that's the hardest part of my role. The minute I stop learning, I tend to resign and move on.

3. Tell us some things we wouldn't know about your kid(s).
a. Connor was a prem baby, I had him at 35 weeks and he was in NICU for 16 days. It was the hardest time of my life... juggling that and having to deal with Bradley and his questions about his baby at home. You'd never say that, if you had to see him now... he's huge and healthy!
b. Bradley is a tattle-tale at the moment. Poor Connor cannot do anything without Bradley coming to call me. Which is a good thing, considering Connor's already broken his collar bone!
c. When we took Bradley on his first seaside holiday when he was 4 months old, he (or rather we) ended up in hospital in Umhlanga for 4 days with gastro! That was a crap holiday!

4. What quote/saying best describes the way you feel about being a mommy?
Pass, I don't do quotes, sayings or songs for that matter! LOL!

5. Who's your Famous Mommy Role Model (haha, like there actually are any good celebrity mommies)

Pass again, I've never been a follower of celebs

6. If you could have one wish granted for your kid(s), what would it be?
That I will be able to provide the means for them to do whatever they want in life, and that they'll find something that they love doing (and not have to work for the sake of working)

That's it, hopefully someone found that interesting.

Feeling Bad

Okay, I know every mother goes through this, and I know it's not the end of the world, but I am feeling a little [okay, a LOT] guilty. Today is The Kid's first time at day care. It feels like I'm admitting that I'm not capable of looking after my own child by myself. Not capable of being a mother, because I have commitments other than my child. The first draft of my thesis is due on the 18th of July, and while I initially thought I'd be able to study while The Kid was home, I discovered I cannot. He demands my full attention.
Which I have now just deprived him of. And dumped him with a daymother. It was slightly heartbreaking, I wont lie. This morning, getting him dressed and ready, he seemed to sense my apprehension. Either that, or I was mistaking his usual moans and groans for something they weren't.
I walked into the daymother's house, with him on my hip, placed him on the playroom floor, and another kid crawled over to him with a ball. My kid took one look at this other baby, opened his mouth so his dummy fell out and just started bawling. And then most of the other kids started bawling too. They seem to set each other off. The daymother quickly ushered me out with assurances that my child would be just fine, he needs to adjust to other children. I didn't even get to kiss him goodbye. I know it's probably better that way, and he probably would have cried even more had I picked him up, but it made me feel awful.
If not for my sister who was with me, I probably would have cried. I managed to last a whole hour before I called the daymother to check on my child. She said he was perfectly happy, had just had his breakfast and was smiling and laughing. I couldn't hear crying in the background, so I was amazed she'd got my child to be quiet.
Oh well. All I can say is she's going to have her hands full with that one. I know I shouldn't worry, as she is the mother of one of The Boyfriend's closest friends, but I cant stop thinking about him!
Tell me it gets better? I know I'm being such a wet blanket, but it would be nice to hear other mommies' first-time-at-daycare experiences, please!!

Well hello there, pleased to meet you

I have been invited to join the Bad Mommies, and I can't pretend that I am not super-excited about it.

So here goes - my first piece of Bad Mommy homework...

1. Post a picture of your kid.

Jackson James. He was only three months old in this photo, but, to this day, it is still one of my most favourite pictures of him.

2. Tell us all 3 things we wouldn't know about you.
1. I really have only two major regrets in my life - a. I turned down a job as a TV presenter and b. that I realised I was totally in love with someone when it was too late to do anything about it.
2. One of the many things I have done is study to be a chef. I couldn't handle working in a professional kitchen though, so I quit to do my post-grad in Journalism at Rhodes University.
3. I have been told I have psychic abilities on more than one occasion, and sometimes I feel like I really do. It's kinda creepy.

3. Tell us some things we wouldn't know about your kid(s).
There's not much here, because I blog about pretty much everything that isn't too personal (my rules = no poo or penis).

But...how about this:
  • Jackson is almost autistic in his love of routine
  • he still likes me to hold him when he drinks his evening bottle
  • one of his favourite things to do is to look out of the car window and shout "allo, allo" to people on the side of the road
  • even though he is surrounded by women most of the time, he seems to have no fear/apprehension of men, I am very grateful about this
  • he is happiest without his clothes on and would be naked all the time if I let him (okay...you probably knew this one).

  • 4. What quote/saying best describes the way you feel about being a mommy?
    My favourite mistake.

    5. Who's your Famous Mommy Role Model (haha, like there actually are any good celebrity mommies).
Um...Britney Spears (JOKES, DUDES). I don't really have any celebrity role models, but I think Dooce and Mommy Pie totally rock.

    6. If you could have one wish granted for your kid(s), what would it be?
That he have a good and kind heart.

The Stork Has Visited One of Our Bad Mommies...[Again]

If you've all been wondering where MamaMeeA is... well, she's been hatching herself a new baby boy.

Due in October. She's taken a bit of a break from blogging to deal with all the overwhelmingness of it all, and hopes to return soon.

In the mean time I thought everyone would like to know, so they can wish her well!

It's All Been One Expensive Mistake

I have this theory, and it seems to pan out mostly. Unplanned pregnancies have an effect on the way you feel toward your child. Women who plan their pregnancies are grateful for them, switch automatically into mothering mode, and seem to relish their new role. I also think that the kind of birth you have, affects your relationship with your child.
Now my pregnancy was definitely unplanned and I never wanted to have children. Children, I thought, were far too much responsibility, far too much of a burden, and I was fine with being a single, career woman for the rest of my life.
One month after having moved out of home, and started my second degree, my boyfriend of two months took me to the doctor. We discovered I was pregnant. At first, abortion seemed like an option. But then I felt a little flutter in my uterus, and realised that there was someone in there. Someone I had created. I dont know whether it was hormones, or whether I had bonded with this little collection of cells, but I suddenly felt protective.
I couldn't picture having a procedure to flush this tiny person from my body. But at the same time I couldn't picture myself changing nappies and wiping snotty noses. But I insisted I was ready for this, and nothing anyone said could make me change my mind.
I was determined to have a natural birth, no drugs as I was told this was the best way to bond with your baby, as once he's out, the doctors put him straight to the breast. And you also apparently feel some sense of achievement at having achieved 'the miracle of natural birth'.
I never got my natural birth with no drugs. I had a c-section under general anaesthetic. The gaps in my spine weren't big enough for me to have an epidural. I awoke about an hour after the birth of my son. I wasn't present for the moment, and even though I have pictures of the event, I sometimes feel a bit excluded. Like I was the last person to see my baby, although I should have been one of the first.
I had no problem bonding with him in the artificial environment of the hospital, where there were nurses on hand to help me out when I felt overwhelmed. I stared at my sleeping baby for most of the time I was in hospital and was in love with this little red-faced squishy thing.
Eight months later when my baby only has eyes for me, and his face lights up when I walk in the room and he laughs and shrieks at the sound of my voice, I feel like a mother. When he cries, is sick, has made a really smelly nappy or is uninterested in his food, I feel like I was coerced into this mothering thing. When he refuses to sleep, play for a while by himself with some toys or doesn't want to know anything about his father and cries to return to his mother, I feel like it's all a little bit too much.
When I realise that I have 18 days until the deadline for my 10,000 word thesis I feel resentful that my baby wants so much of my attention that I cannot devote myself to my studies the way I used to. I call this 'The Accidental Mommy' syndrome. An intense love-hate phenomenon.
Every time he comes back from spending Saturday night at The Boyfriend's parents, I make a promise to him that I'll try my best to be a better mommy this week.
I'll try to be more patient, understanding, playful, and less resentful of sleep/study time lost.Right now I feel like a part-time mother or baby sitter. Biding my time until he has a nap or its bed time, so I can do what I want to do.
Perhaps one day when he opens his mouth and says 'mommy', I will actually feel like one. Until then, ever Sunday I make the promise.
I'll try harder to be a mommy.
    I promise.

Does It Ever Really Sink In?

I have a friend who is a very new mother. Her baby boy was born last Tuesday. She has been battling like I never imagined possible. Seemingly no natural maternal instincts, no idea of what can harm her baby.

It may seem judgmental to say that. And you might think that it's the pot calling the kettle black, and I wish I could help her, but her and her boyfriend seem to be refusing help. Which is very brave. I guess I have probably forgotten my own cluelessness far too quickly. Replaced it with memories of calm efficiency.

Well. Mostly I was calm. Mostly I was efficient, although not necessarily both at the same time. I sent her a message yesterday asking her how the first weekend went. She said it was intense, she never ever felt that out of control about something. But what really got me thinking was the fact that she said she didn't feel like a mother, that it hadn't really sunk in.

Then I realised I didn't really feel like a mother either.

Where am I going with this?

Simple. I want you all to write a post explaining when it is that you most feel like a mother. And when it is that you dont. When did you first realise that you were somebody's mother?

    A Knucklehead Update!!!

Well, my darling Damien is currently on the South African three week long, winter school holiday.
Oh joy (Damien's current favourite saying)...
A bored Damien is never a good thing- he has not yet found a job, his friends are not within walking distance, and I have not yet replaced/ refilled my fire extinguishers (yes I know- I'm a bad mommy), I just haven't got around to it!
He's just finished his second term exams at school too- and after the first term's disastrous test results this term had better be a vast improvement otherwise he's in trouble.
In other non-educational adventure news, the knucklehead and my Glugs get on famously. They laugh together over silly things like whether tomatoes are fruits or vegetables, and Damien's invention of the "Book Of Botanical Shit" which Glugs insisted he had the newest publication of in his bookshelf at home. Then Glugs and I are sitting downstairs watching a movie or TV and the Knucklehead is playing Warhammer upstairs on the PC and Glugs will be "summoned" to compare notes or point something out in terms of where Damien is supposedly kicking his butt in the game (they're both playing the game but with different armies).
Damien is a little apprehensive about our moving in with my Glugs in August/ September... As am I! Apart from dreading the packing up of almost 13 year's accumulated crap (thats how long we've been in our flat) I am more than a little wary of giving up my independence to move in with him. Damien is a little nervous simply because its a big change for him... he is excited about having a pool and his own bathroom though- and he's happy that our furbabies are going with us and he doesn't have to change schools.
And a couple of weeks ago we spent the long weekend in Durban and Damien got to "dive" in uShaka's shark tank! I haven't seen him so excited about something in a long time. Then the three of us did a "reef walk" with these heavy glass domes over our heads and a manta ray gliding over us! It was awesome, and Damien could barely contain himself!

And amazingly- and in a total first for Damien- he is still dating his girlfriend "Flower" after 4 months! As much as I wish he would stay single till he's at least 25, he's way too gawjiss for the girls to leave him alone... LOL!

    sweets update

Concerta turned out to be a kind of a blessing and a curse all mixed together in a white tablet to be taken once a day, with breakfast :)

it's about two weeks now that Kay's on the medication and although I'm trying soooooo hard to be negative about this... so i can just tell his doc..... sorry this drug is just not for my kid ok!?

    sigh

    it's kind of working... wonders

    who knew?

the new focused super charged Kay is a easy child to live with, I never knew he was so all over the place until he wasn't anymore... he still eats his food, although a bit less, i noticed that... he's also struggling to sleep more than 6-8 hours at a time... i'll see more of the results with his school work next term, it's school holiday now... but the big breakthrough is ... he's not so anxious anymore...

he's taking chances! real "dangerous" steps in his mind... like walking to school! this is a HUGE step for him... i know it sounds silly but really, as his mother i know what a big deal this was... granted it's not all the way to school, halfway... but still... halfway!!!

I'm slowly exhaling and my heart is bursting a little cause I'm so proud of him!

    baby steps... :)

    The Kid Update

    My absence has been inexcusable.

Let me fill you in on what's happening with The Kid:

    • He has one tooth. One at the bottom. It's partner is taking so long to come through. He was completely miserable throughout. He now bites me. Often. Little snot.

    • He has discovered how to leopard crawl. You know, dragging himself along the floor by his arms. He's exploring everything, pulling the curtains, the plugs, the TV cables. And always wants to touch the heater. And cries and wobbles his bottom lip when I sternly say 'no, dont touch'.

    • He has been sick this last week. Flu and ear infection. He only wants his mommy, wants nothing to do with his father. Has been so miserable I have renamed him The Prince of Darkness. On the plus side, he now drinks his medicine out of a spoon (previously I had to use a syringe) and doesn't spill any. Think he might be becoming a Stopayne addict.

    • When he's really miserable I let him sleep between The Boyfriend and myself. He either sleeps right up against my back, or sleeps under his dad's armpit.

    • He's eating solids. Refuses vegetables. Only eats fruit and cereal. Still loves his milk. Toast and Bovril or toast and honey is the bomb, as far as he's concerned. Getting quite good at feeding himself from a selection of fruit pieces and little squares of toast. Even though a good portion of it gets mashed into his hair and on his lap.

    • He's sleeping through the night. From 6pm to 6 am. Every night. Bless.

Am a very grateful bad mommy. And all you others? What's new in your lives??

    The worst mama ever . . . .

So, it goes like this. I fetch Ciara from aftercare at school yesterday and she is crying. I immediately ask her whats wrong, like the good momma I thought I was, and she tells me she fell and hurt her wrist.

So I ask her if it is sore when she moves it, must we go to the hospital or does she think she will be okay. She tells me that it is REALLY sore. I am getting really frustrated, because seriously, who wants to go and sit at the emergency room at night in the cold?

I'm thinking, it's probably just bruised, this child is such a drama queen*.

So after much mmming and aaahing, I head over to Unitas to have my child seen to. I am not a happy momma at this point. I want to be at home. It's dark. It's cold. I have SO many chores to do.

After spending 400 hours** at the emergency room, we get the result that she has, in fact, fractured her wrist. She is currently in a splint, with a cast being put on on Friday.

So, it's official. I'm the crappiest momma ever.

    * In my defence, the child is the queen of drama, and belongs on stage, in fact, she should be awarded an honorary Academy Award for Outstanding Performance in Bawling at Absolutely Everything.
** Okay, so it was only an hour and a half, but the drama queen apple does not fall far from the drama queen tree.
