What Worked For You?

I know a mommy with a new baby girl. The kid is colicky and cries constantly. We've all been there, we all know what it's like.

So, I want to know - what worked for you? What was your miracle cure?

I'm going to collect all the answers, and send them to her, just so she has a bunch of options to try.

(you may reply to this as a comment - ie: this question is thrown wide to contributors and readers alike)

When he was little, Jackson cried with colic-like symptoms for 16-18 hours a day. It was so terrible, i didn't know what to do with myself.

The paed said that his little system couldn't break down the big protiens in dairy or soya and it was causing him loads of pain.

Because I was breastfeeding, I was put on a very strict dairy and soya-free diet, which I stuck to religiously.

It was a total miracle, within two days he was a completely different child and has never really cried since, it was like he got it all out of his system in the first three weeks of his life.

If I ever have another baby, I am going to go on this diet from DAY ONE for at least three/four months. No question.

A simple cause might be that she's not winding the baby properly.

On saying that, I found that tissue salts worked brilliantly. It's completely natural, and so easy to crush the tab and feed it to baby mixed with a little water in a syringe, or just added to the bottle.

Also, I used Telament, but there's a trick to it. A lot of people add it to the bottle, but that doesn't work as it needs to line the stomach before the milk hits it. So, I had a routine of giving him Telament drops before I changed his nappy, and then fed him after the nappy change. That way there was about 10 minutes gap to allow it to line the tummy.

If she's bottle-feeding and the problem is really serious, there are formulas on the market that are specifically AR (anti reflux).

Connor had a serious problem in the end though, so I had to thicken his milk with crap stuff that I had to cook (until I found a AR formula that worked for us). Hopefully your friend never has to go that far.

My boy didn't really have colic but he had a couple of long (2 hours) crying jags and the thing that helped both of us was dancing around the living room to Gershwin. The bouncing seemed to help him and the music + movement kept me from losing my mind.

I've just finished an article for Your Baby on osteopathy for colic. No medicine involved, just gentle manipulation. It'll only be appearing in Oct, so in the meantime, I could give you contact details for osteopaths?
